What's the Problem?

My Computer is Acting Strange

Sometimes, for no apparent reason Windows will start doing something out of the ordinary. It might be something as small as Windows Explorer displaying differently, or something larger. Even something very small can be exceptionally annoying when it interferes with how you use your computer.

1. Reboot
The first thing to try when something like this occurs is to reboot your computer. Most of these small problems can be cured with a simple reboot.

Once you have closed all your running programs go to: Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart.

Okay, so now you're back in Windows XP after a reboot. Is the problem still occurring? If yes continue on to the next step; if the problem seems to have fixed itself, assume it has unless it occurs again.

2. Check for malware
The next step is to check your computer for malware that may be interfering with its normal operation.

If you do not currently have antivirus installed, look here. If you are currently running antivirus software, make sure it's up-to-date and run a full virus scan.

You also need to check for spyware and adware that could be interfering with your system.

If you already have spyware protection installed, run a scan. If not look here under Spyware/Adware.

After you have removed any malware that may have been affecting your computer, reboot. If the problem seems to be fixed, it was probably the fault of the malware. If the problem persists, continue on.

3. Restore your System
Windows XP includes the capability to repair itself automaticly from many different types of problems using a tool called System Restore.

To run System Restore go to: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Select Restore my computer to an eariler time and click Next. Then on the calander click to select a bold date from before you first noticed the problem.

Click Next and continue with the System restore. After the System Restore completes and the computer reboots the operating system and all programs will be in the state they were in on the date you selected.

This will probably fix the problem, but if it doesn't, continue.

4. Ask for help
If the above steps did not fix your problem, and you cannot find a solution by searching on Google; post it on the JS TechSolutions Forum for help.
