NT Backup

Hard drives fail more often than any other component on a typical computer.

When a hard drive fails it is normally impossible to recover any data without spending a small fortune at a data recovery service.

Therefore, if you have any data on your computer that is at all valuable to you, having a functional backup system in-place is absolutely essential.

Windows XP includes a minimal, yet usable backup program called NT Backup. For some reason however, NT Backup does not come pre-installed on Windows XP Home Edition.

To install NT Backup on Windows XP Home Edition, you need to insert your Windows XP CD and navigate to D:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP > select Ntbackup.msi

When installation is complete you can access NT Backup by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.

  • For a simple configuration of NT Backup look here.
  • For a more in-depth view have a look at the NT Backup help files.
  • If for some reason you're interested in my own configuration; read on.

One option that works well is to have NT Backup perform a complete backup of documents and settings over night to an external hard drive or a network computer. Then, set-up two of these schemes so that each one performs a backup every other day.

This way you have each day’s changes backed-up. Plus, if you accidentally deleted an important file and didn't realize it till the following day, one of your backups will still contain the file.

To set this up start Nt Backup by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.

When NT Backup loads you should see this window. Click Advanced Mode > select the Backup tab.

In the Backup tab window browse through your hard drive and check the folders you wish to backup. Under Backup media or file name select the destination of your backup, click Start Backup > click Schedule. You will then need to save your backup selections then enter your user account password. Enter a job name and click Properties specify the schedule and then finish.
